Earthquake Resilience of High-Rise Buildings: Case Study of the 2011 Tohoku (Japan) Earthquake

The paper, 2nd chapter of Improving the Earthquake Resilience of Building, is based on the case study of the 2011, Tohoku (Japan). It focuses on the response of high-rise buildings to long-period ground motions. It is the most controversial issue in the field of earthquake-resistant design in Japan.   This paper  provides important insights on the earthquake resilience of high rise buildings. The report /chapter shows that the influence of any earthquake depends upon  the plate (including epicenter) on which mega cities lie and on the soil condition supporting buildings. This fact has been confirmed on the basis  of data provided by  the Japanese Government in December 2010. It suggests that accumulated data and experiences are very important in the reliable seismic   design of structures. As well as theoretical expectations and predictions are also of significance for the design of extremely important structures. This was demonstrated in the past earthquakes. The relation of the structural properties of high-rise buildings with the properties of long-period ground motions plays a key role in the evaluation of seismic response of high-rise buildings
