National Disaster Management Guideline On Boat Safety

India has a wide network of inland waterways. it  consist of rivers, backwaters, canals and creeks. Boat navigation is the main source of transportation.  However   passenger boat accident is quite common in India.  It was Dhubri ferry tragedy of 30th April, 2012 on river Brahmaputra that caused the loss of over 250 lives. After this accident the need of guidelines for boat  safety  was felt.  It was also discovered that most of the boat tragedies were on account of overloading and various other factors. After consultation with stakeholders, NDMA decided to prepare National Guidelines on Boat Safety. The guidelines provides  action points for  states to  regulate  the passenger boat navigation in the established waterways in the regions. The country boats in these waterways generally carry more number of passengers than technically acceptable and reliable from safety considerations. The design of these boats and their engines are mostly local made or impoverished that rarely acquires certificates before drafting for commercial operations. Moreover, these boats have no safety measures.  The Guidelines on Boats Safety aims to increase the and security of the passenger.
